Week February 29-March 4

Our newest Leader of the Week is…

Hayden!!
Hayden’s amazing ability to begin with the end in mind and put first things first has helped him to read all 10 BOB books!! He also led his team to compete in the 5th grade Battle of the Books competition! Hayden puts first things first every day whether it is in writing, math, or social studies. He also has a proactive attitude and he loves to sharpen the saw by playing soccer for Oldham Soccer Club! Way to go, Hayden!!

Good afternoon, parents! We’ve had an awesome week! I was especially impressed with the kiddos this week during science! After learning about the distance of a light year, they were asked to create a scale model of the nearest stars to Earth (aside from the sun) using toothpicks, Pirate’s Booty (a puffed rice and corn snack) and any materials they could find around the room. I wasn’t sure how it would go at first, but they blew me away and the designs varied from group to group! Check out our blog post on this to see some examples of their hard work! J

Here’s what we’re learning this week!
Science: How do objects in the sky impact our earth? How do shadows affect gardens? This week we will investigate shadows and their impact on gardens. We will also explore how the moon and other object in the sky impact Earth.
Social Studies: We will assess the kids’ understanding of the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights this week. Then we will begin to learn about the levels of government (local, state, and federal)
Math: Our test over multiplying and dividing fractions & mixed numbers will be on Tuesday. Then we will begin a new unit on geometry. This means the kids will be regrouped and most likely, your child will have a different teacher for math.
Reading: How do scenes, chapters, and stanzas fit together to make the overall structure of a text? We are beginning a new ELA unit this week, entitled Explorations. The kids will begin by exploring various types of exploration themed texts to analyze them to see how the pieces of the text fit together to create the overall message.
Writing: What are Dadaism and surrealism? How does art tell a story? We will explore Dadaism and surrealism in art this week as we write to compare and contrast various artworks and to create stories from art.
